ELIGIBILITY UPDATE
Those wishing to be elected or co-opted to a parish or town council must satisfy
certain eligibility criteria, one of which is nationality.
The definition has now been
updated following the UK’s exit from the European Union. Prior to May 2024 a
candidate had to “be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen or a
citizen of any member state of the European Union”.
From May 2024 the wording
is changed such that a candidate must “be a British citizen, an eligible
Commonwealth citizen, a qualifying EU citizen or an EU citizen with retained
rights”.
